Greetings,
In an era where the labor movement has been chronically portrayed as
languishing on the ropes, some interesting news from Seattle, where two
high-profile labor disputes have occupied local attention.
As Julie (a rep for the Wa Federation of State Employees) rose extra early
this Monday to join the first day of picketing at the UW on behalf of the
newly formed Graduate Student Employee Action Coalition, we heard a news
headline on local NPR that the strike had been averted by an overnight
agreement. Without further details, we logged onto the Seattle Times website
for an update, but found nothing but an old article on the "impending
strike."
As the Times has been embroiled in a strike of their own now for some two
weeks, we were delighted to find that the Newspaper Guild's own online
newspaper, the Seattle Union Leader, had scooped "Fairview Fanny" with an
extensive report on the settlement.
As of this writing, a little after 7:30 PST, the Times has yet to carry
this story, surely the biggest of the day.
