Today is Wednesday, 1 November 2000; on this day,

468 years ago (1532),

     Francois Rabelais is appointed physician to the Grand Hotel-Dieu de
     Notre Dame de Pitie du Pontdu-Rhone in Lyon.

129 years ago (1871),

     Stephen Crane--poet, novelist (_The Red Badge of Courage_), and war
     correspondent in Cuba from 1896 to 1898--is born in Newark, New Jersey.

120 years ago (1880),

     Sholem Asch, one of the most widely translated Yiddish novelists (_A
     Passage in the Night_; _The Nazarene_) and playwrights (_The God of
     Vengeance_), is born in Poland. He will become a naturalized American
     citizen in 1920 (his plays achieve great success in New York City's
     Yiddish theater). Settling in Israel in 1956, he dies there the
     following year.

70 years ago (1930),

     Ernest Hemingway suffers a broken arm when he crashes his car while
     returning from a ten-day hunting trip with John Dos Passos.

28 years ago (1972),

     On writing biography, Rebecca West will confess in _Vogue_:  "Just
     how difficult it is to write biography can be reckoned by anyone who
     sits down and considers just how many people know the truth about his
     or her love affairs."

             The Book of Wisdom

     I met a seer.
     He held a book in his hands,
     The book of wisdom.
     "Sir," I addressed him,
     "Let me read."
     "Child--" be began.
     "Sir," I said,
     "Think not that I am a child,
     For already I know much
     Of that which you hold;
     Aye, much."

     He smiled.
     Then he opened the book
     And held it before me.
     Strange that I should have grown
       so suddenly blind.
