Today is Monday, 19 June 2000; on this day,

434 years ago (1566),

James VI, minor poet and King of Scots, is born. He becomes known
as "the wisest fool in Christendom." (LS)

377 years ago (1623),

Blaise Pascal philosopher, scientist, and writer (_Pensees_) is
     born in Clermont-Ferrand.

184 years ago (1816),

Staying up all night to tell ghost stories with his wife and Lord
Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley suddenly becomes hysterical and runs
     shrieking from the room.

66 years ago (1934),

Anglo-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie is born in Bombay, India. The
1988 publication of _The Satanic Verses_ will be condemned by Muslims
worldwide and force Rushdie into hiding for several years.

18 years ago (1982),

John Cheever (_The Wapshot Chronicle_) dies, aged 70, in Ossining,
     New York.

Today's poem:

                       Time Long Past

Like the ghost of a dear friend dead
	Is Time long past.
A tone which is now forever fled,
A hope which is now forever past,
A love so sweet it could not last,
	Was Time long past.

There were sweet dreams in the night
	Of Time long past:
And, was it sadness or delight,
Each day a shadow onward cast
Which made us wish it yet might last--
	That Time long past.

     There is regret, almost remorse,
	For Time long past.
'Tis like a child's belovId corse
A father watches, till at last
     Beauty is like remembrance, cast
	From Time long past.

                                               Percy Shelley
