Finalists Announced at the second International
Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs
A Blind Vocal Instructor from Iowa, a Professor at MIT, and A Starbucks
Assistant Store manager are among the Six Who Made the Cut
FORT WORTH, TEXAS, June 8, 2000 - Six amateur pianists have been
selected to advance to the final round of the second International Piano
Competition for Outstanding Amateurs.
Those advancing from an initial pool of 18 semifinalists include Debra
Saylor, a visually-impaired voice instructor from Iowa; Michael Hawley, an
MIT professor from Massachusetts; and Christopher Basso, an assistant
manager at Starbucks from New York.
The one final round session will take place Saturday, June 10 at Ed
Landreth Auditorium from 3:00 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. It will be followed by the
Awards Ceremony, which will end at 8:00 p.m.
Each finalist will play a 30-minute recital program that may not
include works performed in the earlier rounds.
The First Prize includes a $2,000 check presented by Steinway & Sons
and a recital engagement at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. on
Sunday, June 18, 2000, sponsored by The Smithsonian Associates.

4:19 PM Debra Saylor - Private Voice Instructor, Reinbeck, IA
4:52 PM Michael Moore - Court Reporter, Tucson, AZ
5:37 PM Steven Ryan - Computer Consultant, New York, NY
6:10 PM Charles Chien - Flight Attendant Purser, Manhattan Beach, CA
