Today is Tuesday, 11 April 2000; on this day,

86 years ago (1914),

	George Bernard Shaw's _Pygmalion_ opens at His Majesty's Theatre
     in London with Herbert Beerbohm Tree as Higgins and Mrs.  Patrick
     Campbell as Eliza, on the eve of Shaw's 15th anniversary of
     corresponding with the actress.

69 years ago (1931),

	Dorothy Parker steps down as drama critic for _The New Yorker_,
     ending a self-described "Reign of Terror."

Today's poem:

                          Interior

     Her mind lives in a quiet room
     a narrow room, and tall
     with pretty lamps to quench the gloom
     and mottoes on the wall.

     There all the things are waxen neat
     and set in decorous lines
     and there are posies, round and sweet
     and little straightened vines.

     Her mind lives quietly apart from
     cold and noise and pain
     and bolts the door against her heart
     out wailing in the rain.
