From: "Haikus for Jews: For You, A Little Wisdom", by David M. Balder
(Harmony Books, 1999)
Beyond Valium,
the peace of knowing one's child
is an internist.
In a stage whisper
a yenta confides the name
of her friend's disease.
Jewish triathlon--
gin rummy, then contract bridge
followed by a nap.
Seven-foot Jews in
the NBA slam-dunking--
my alarm clock rings.
A lovely nose ring--
excuse me while I put my
head in the oven.
Hidden connection--
starvation in Africa,
food left on my plate.
Tea ceremony--
steam, incense, lacquered bamboo.
Try the cheese danish.
Jewish summer camp--
the tall pines cleared of wildlife
by a sing-along.
The Jewish New Year--
in Times Square, no ball is dropped.
Where is everyone?
Is one Nobel Prize
so much to ask from a child
after all I've done?
