Today is Sunday, 22 August 1999; on this day,

221 years ago (1778),

Early American dramatist and novelist chiefly remembered for his advocacy
and use of native American material in literature, James Kirke Paulding,
is born in Dutchess County, New York. Aiming to encourage American
writers to find literary themes in their own country rather than in
Europe, Paulding's "The Backwoodsman" looks at the advantages and
   harships of western migration.

106 years ago (1893),

Satirical author and poet Dorothy Parker is born in West End, New Jersey.
She will remark: "I was following in the exquisite footsteps of Miss Edna
St. Vincent Millay, unhappily in my own horrible sneakers." In 1963 she
turns 70 and quips: "If I had any decency, I'd be dead. Most of my
   friends are."

95 years ago (1904),

Kate Chopin dies in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The author of
more than 100 short stories, Chopin's merits as a write are only now
   being realized.

79 years ago (1920),

Playwright, poet, and SciFi writer Ray Bradbury (_The Martian
Chronicles_) is born in Waukegan, Illinois. Commenting on individualism,
he will maintain: "the power of any country is the sum of the total of
its individuals. Each individual rich with ideas, with concepts, rich
   with his own revolution."
