159 years ago (1840),

	Alphonse Daudet, novelist--_Letters from My Mill_ and _The
     Prodigious Adventures of Tartarin of Tarascon_--is born in Niimes.

93 years ago (1906),

	Willa Cather signs on as an editor for the muckraking _McClure's
     Magazine_.

92 years ago (1907),

	Novelist Daphne du Maurier (_Rebecca_) is born in London, the
     daughter of actor Gerald du Maurier. She will describe writing a book
     as "a purge; at the end of it one is empty. . .like a dry shell on
     the beach, waiting for the tide to come in again."

83 years ago (1916),

	In New York, the creator of Tevye, popularized in the musical
     comedy _The Fiddler on the Roof_, Sholem Aleichem, dies. Most of his
     works in Yiddish have been translated into English, including _Jewish
     Children_, _The Old Country_, _Adventures of Mottel, the Cantor's
     Son_, and his most popular, _Tevye, the Diaryman_, the story of a
     tradition-bound father as he watches his three daughters marry men he
     feels are below them.

49 years ago (1950),

	In _The New Yorker_, Hemingway is quoted: "I started out very
     quiet and I beat Mr. Turgenev. Then I trained hard and I beat Mr de
     Maupassant. I've faought two draws with Mr Stendhal, and I think I
     had an edge in the last one. But nobody's going to get me in any ring
     with Mr Tolstoy unless I'm crazy or I keep getting better."
