Samuel Johnson's magnum opus, _A Dictionary of the English
Language_, is published. He says: "Dictionaries are like watches. The
worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite
true."
156 years ago (1843),
Henry James is born in New York. In 1913 friends and admirers will
present him with a golden bowl on his 70th birthday.
61 years ago (1938),
Having left his homeland of Peru in 1923, then once being expelled
from Paris in 1930 as a political militant, Cesar Vallejo, will die in
the French capital. He kept in touch with Peru by publishing articles in
_Amauta_, the journal espablished by his friend Jose Carlos Mariaategui,
founder of the Peruvian Communist party.
