Empirical philosopher John Locke, 72, dies at Oates, the home of
Sir Francis Masham in High Laver, Essex, his last words--"Cease
now"--addressed to Lady Masham, who sits at his bedside reading the
Psalms aloud.

e. e. cummings, Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry, gives the
first of six "non lectures" at Harvard.
