LITERARY CALENDAR Tuesday, October 27 1998 Volume 01 : Number 258
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Today is Tuesday, 27 October 1998; on this day,

Dylan Thomas, poet, is born in Swansea, Wales: "My education was
the liberty I had to read indiscriminately and all the time, with my
eyes hanging out."
67 years ago (1931),
Egyptian writer, physician, and feminist who is sometimes described
as "the Simone de Beauvoir, of the Arab world," Nawal El Saadawi is born
in Kafr Tahla. In her novels, short stories, and nonfiction, she will
deal chiefly with the status of Arab women.
48 years ago (1950),
Fran Lebowitz, author of _Metropolitan Life_ and _Social
Studies_--and of the trenchant but oft-ignored caveat "Having been
unpopular in high school is not just cause for book publication"--is

The author, gourmet food lover, and orchid grower Rex Stout dies in
