MICROSOFT'S GATES URGES FAST CABLE LINK TO INTERNET
Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates urged cable companies Monday to
develop high-speed cable links to the Internet, saying it would set new
standards for the growing industry. "In the near term, there's no one else
that can provide these things," Gates said in a speech at the National
Cable Television Association meeting in Atlanta. Microsoft hopes to supply
cable operators with software to run advanced new cable TV set-top boxes
that consumers will use to access ordinary television, the Internet and
other services. The company announced a deal in January to supply its
set-top software, Windows CE, in 5 million boxes.
