Subject: Fun Status Update

Dear Fun Ones,
    You may be wondering what's happening with Fun_People.  You  
might even think you've been dropped from its select company.  Well,  
have no fear, I haven't started it up again (yet).
    When I got back from my little seven-week vacation, the disk  
that holds all my non-system stuff (including Fun_People) was  
blowing a bearing.  The system only barely runs without it.  So I'm  
setting up to recreate it from backups...  Ug.  I looked into some  
of these recover-the-data-from-dead-disks places, but they're priced  
way out of sight...
    If anyone knows of a trick to get a screaming set of bearings  
on a Seagate ST11200N to work long enough to dump the 1,054 MB of  
data please let me know; right now it makes a sound like a 747  
taking off... and then it spins itself down... and up... and down...  
and up... and down... and ...
    Meanwhile I'm looking for a reasonable deal on a quiet, fast  
SCSI disk in the 2 - 4 Gig ballpark -- ideally one with a loong MTBF  
(as if that were a guarantee of anything).  I expect to have  
Fun_People running again in the next week (forewarned is forearmed).
    Keep smiling (and thinking globally, acting locally, and most  
important of all -- ignoring smarmy advice).

p.s.
    I lost some email in the disk death event, so if you sent me  
urgent email that I seem to be ignoring, it's either because it's  
hiding in the 3,000 e-mail items waiting in my inbox (actually it's  
down to 1,383 as of late last night) or it fell into the disk  
bearing crevasse and is gone forever.  If it's really important you  
should send it again and I apologize for the inconvenience...
