LAST Tuesday we asked for readers' help in finding the origin of a phrase
which is described as typically Australian in a new British text called Your
Mother's Tongue -- A Book of European Invective. The phrase was: "Stick
your dick in your ear and f--- some sense into yourself." Several readers
phoned, all complaining that they found the phrase offensive (which may be
why the English editors assumed it was typically Australian). None of the
callers had heard the phrase before, confirming our impression that the book
is wrong in identifying it as a standard part of Australian slang. So we
renew our request for background data, and to avoid further offence, we will
reprint it today as: "Why don't you stick your ---- in your ear and ----
some sense into yourself."
