Subject: W.F. Buckley joins Glasser to DEFEND cybersmut

From: Jim Warren <jwarren@WELL.COM>

First, Buckley ardently supports legalizin' drugs; now he's joining *with*
the ACLU's Ira Glasser to defend electrosex, while good ol' Bill Clinton's
appointee is gonna defend censorship. Hot dang -- it's gittin' harder 'n'
harder to figer out who good Liberals is s'posed to demonize, these daze.

>FYI, the next program in the occasional FIRING LINE SPECIAL DEBATE series
>is titled & described as follows:
>
> "RESOLVED: CYBERSPACE DOESN'T NEED SPECIAL PROTECTION FROM SMUT" (W.T.)
>
>Description: Porn on the Internet is not the sole aspect of the argument.
>The telecommunications bill currently before Congress could change the
>ground rules for every area of the communications industry. Can the new
>technology be regulated? In an era when every desktop has the power to
>become a broadcasting station, is government intervention in it actually
>possible? If so, is it right or wrong and where does the First Amendment
>fit in? Should the protection of children prevail over the adult right of
>free access to information?
>
>Ira Glasser, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union will
>join host William F. Buckley to argue in favor of the resolution. FCC
>chairman Reed Hundt heads the other side. Other debate guests TBD.
>Michael Kinsley moderates.
>
>PBS Distribution Date/Time -- Fri., 3/22/96, 2100-2300 EST
>
>The usual caveat -- check local listings for airdate and time in your
>market. While the production values for this series are mediocre, at best,
>the content is often provocative and enlightening.
