AT&T'S NEW SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY COMPANY SELECTS A NAME
	-- BusinessWire Press Release:

    MURRAY HILL, NJ--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 1996--AT&T today
announced that its new systems and technology company has selected
Lucent Technologies as its name.
The company, which has been formed as a result of AT&T's planned
restructuring into three separate, publicly held companies, designs,
builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks,
communications systems and software, consumer and business telephone
systems and microelectronics components. Bell Laboratories is the
research and development arm for the new company.
The naming of Lucent Technologies is the latest milestone in a
process that began last September 20 when AT&T announced its proposed
restructuring into three stand-alone entities. The three companies
are: a communications services company that retains the AT&T name and
logo; Lucent Technologies, the systems and technology company that
was named today; and a business computing company that recently
changed its name back to NCR Corporation.
As part of the naming process, Lucent Technologies conducted
interviews and focus groups with employees, customers, technical
leaders and industry analysts around the world.
"When you bear one of the best known names in communications,
selecting a new name takes on even more significance," said Henry
Schacht, who has been designated chairman and CEO for the company.
"The focus groups and interviews told us that Lucent Technologies
differentiated us from AT&T and at the same time was a strong, simple
memorable name. It suggests clarity of thought, purpose and vision,
and had a technological feel."
Lucent is a word found in the dictionary that means "marked by
clarity" or "glowing with light."
The company also unveiled its new symbol -- a bold, red,
hand-drawn circle that it dubbed "the innovation ring." The company
name often will be linked with the endorsement line "Bell Labs
Innovations."

o In addition to Bell Laboratories, the new company is composed
of the following businesses, all of which will carry the Lucent
   Technologies name.

o Network Systems -- which provides public
   networking systems and software to
   telecommunications providers and cable companies

o Business Communications Systems (formerly known
as Global Business Communications Systems) -- which
   develops, manufactures, markets and services
advanced communications products and systems for
   business customers

o Consumer Products -- which designs, manufactures, sells,
services and leases communications products for consumers

o Microelectronics -- which designs and manufactures
   high-performance integrated circuits, optoelectronic components,
power systems and printed circuit boards for applications in the
   telecommunications and computing industries.

o Multimedia Ventures and Technologies -- which provides advanced
technology systems and support services for government and commercial
customers, and manufactures and distributes network access products.
