Longview, Washington:

Forget Rambo's explosive arrows.  If you want to bring down a helicopter
with a bow and arrow, aim for the rear rotor.

That's how Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies say a man downed a Weyerhaeuser
Company chopper Thursday.

The copter made an emergency landing in a clearing three miles away and
those aboard escaped injury.

Ray Doyle of Shelton, Washington, who had been camping and hunting deer on
Weyerhaeuser land, was arrested and charged with malicious mischief and
first-degree assault.

Helicopter pilot Patrick Stack said he was maneuvering the Bell 206 Long
Ranger 75 feet over the trees when he saw a man track it with his hunting
bow and let fly.  The aluminum arrow hit a rear stabilizing rotor, disabling
it, and pierced the craft's metal skin.

Pisa, Italy:

The Leaning Tower of Pisa has suddenly shifted, jeopardizing years of
preservation work to stabilize it.

The tower, built on shifting subsoil between 1174 and 1350 as a belfry for
the nearby cathedral, recently moved 0.07 inches in one night.

The tower has been closed to tourists since 1990 but officials hope to
partially reopen it next year.

New York, New York:

Another sure sign the world is rapidly changing beyond recognition:  The
Old Farmer's Almanac, that 204-year- old, relentlessly old-fashioned source
of practical information, is upgrading its image.

For one thing, the almanac, best known for its weather forecasts, is now on
the info superhighway (http:///www.xensei.com/ofa/.)

The almanac is also expanding its editorial content in an effort to appeal
to all ages, which probably explains why the current issue has an article
on aphrodisiacs.
