WELCOME TO THE SHOP, BOSS.  William Lazarus of the Times in Munster,
Ind. (lazarus (at) howpubs.com) advises:
     "I hear that a new CEO has taken charge at Times-Mirror. The fellow
comes out of General Mills, has no experience with newspapers and has
the reputation of being a cost cutter. And what tag have the wags given
this guy? Cereal killer."
     And by the way, Lazarus, that's a great handle for someone in the
news business.

WHEN PEEVED IN THE UK, THEY THINK OF NEWSPAPER PIONEERS.  Michael Crew
of some idyllic, sun-drenched spa in Blighty reports, "Scottish born
James Gordon Bennett moved to the U.S.A. and in 1835 founded the New
York Herald. His son, Gordon Bennett II, continued the successful
formula of sensational and outrageous stories which provoked the
incredulous exclamation 'Gordon Bennett!' still used as an alternative
to 'godalmighty.' Blimey. Honest, gov, I never knew it was a Yank
expression."
     Startled, the Truth or Reporting Committee sought verification and
Brother Mike replied, "Oh yes. It's quite often used. Rather vulgar, but
a bit more refined than 'gorblimey.' Heard on telly in Steptoe & Son for
example, but NOT in Absolutely Fabulous!"
     Yes, well, think of that: Newspaper mogul to interjection in only a
few thousand editions.  One wonders what event will inspire future
generations to declare, "Joe Pulitzer!" "Bill Hearst!" or "Thomson
Newspapers Inc.!"  And since New York City's curb-your-dog law came into
strict enforcement, one hardly ever hears "Oh, Rupert Murdoch!" any
more.
