uh, I did look it up in the Random House Dictionary of the English
Language [unabridged] when I got home, and "ukelele" is recognized as a
variant spelling.  But definitely, the Hawaiian root is the primary
spelling.

Random House says it is named after an English military officer who got
the nickname ukulele after his lively style of playing; 'uku' meaning flea
and 'lele' meaning jumping.
