[A number of people have responded with real cases that approximated those in
the list as well as 28 more entries for it.  The incident described below
doesn't sound like it was a thesis defense so much as a fraternity hazing (I
know, I know, you're asking, "what's the difference?")... -psl]

We once asked this particularly annoying guy if he would spontaneously
combust, and after the laughter died down, he said, rather meekly,
"well ... if I did, then it wouldn't be spontaneous, would it ...?"
