Supplies run short for sexual athletes

FROM JOHN GOODBODY, SPORTS NEWS CORRESPONDENT IN SYDNEY

NOT all the pump and grind in Sydney's Olympic Village is to do with
training schedules. To help competitors to join together in a spirit of
love, the Games organisers provided 50,000 free condoms, placed in bins in
the Olympic Village, close to Stadium Australia and the main sporting venues
for athletes to help themselves.
So eager were the 10,300 contestants, 39 per cent of whom are women,
to take advantage of this complimentary issue that 30,000 condoms have been
used already and the organisers have had to rush through an order for
another 20,000 to ensure they that can satisfy the expected demand before
the Games close.

Pacific Dunlop, a Games sponsor, which owns the condom manufacturing
company Ansell, has this week sent lorries full of fresh condoms into the
Village.

A company spokeswoman, Cath O'Connell, said: "With the Olympic Games
coming to a close, a lot of athletes have more time on their hands. Now
it's party time, and why not? They have worked very hard for months and
often years.

"You can imagine that with 10,000 young, fit and healthy competitors
in the village, relationships will blossom. We just want everyone to be
prepared for any eventuality."
