	South African novelist Alan Paton (_Cry, the Beloved Country_) is
   born in Pietermaritzburg.

71 years ago (1928),

	Thomas Hardy dies at his home near Dorchester at 87.  His heart is
   buried in the grave of his first wife in Dorset; his ashes are deposited
   next to those of Charles Dickens in Westminster Abbey.
