According to my mother, this is true. My father tells it in the 3rd person.

Upon returning from his first day at school, my father asked if Leroy, his
new friend, could come for tea sometime.

"Leroy?" his mother mused. "What a nice name. Is he black?"

"I don't know... I'll ask," he added helpfully.
